Working To A Brief

Requirements and techniques of working to a brief.

In media you will always be required to work to a brief of some sort, there are five different types.

Contractual – This type is a contract between you and the client. There will be a list of requirements such as deadlines, costs, aims, objectives. It is important to meet this criteria . If you fail to meet the requirements it could result in you not getting paid and it may look bad on you and your company.

Formal – This would be a meeting with your potential  client in a formal location like an office or conference room. You will have to act very professional in this sort of environment. You could possibly be asked to show your ideas in a presentation ,this can increase your chances of getting to work with the client. You will come across as a professional and give a good impression.  However a disadvantage could be the stress it causes trying to come across a professional.

Negotiated – This is where clients have a basic idea of what they want but you can also have your input in the brief. This is because the client may not be able to think in the way that you do. You may have more ideas because of your experiences and work you have done before. You can also give the client a time frame of how long it could take and a budget.

Informal – A more relaxed approach, this means an interview could be in a bar or over the phone. This could be a discussion of ideas and outcomes of the possible project.

Tender- This is a brief that can be distributed to a range of of companies, universities and colleges and can also be posted online. These organisations will then produce a pitch for a client so that they can then put their ideas across and get the chance to do the production. This is like a competition between these organisations and the winner to get the job.

Understand Rap – William Buckholz

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=19507326

Based on the website of the same name, Understand Rap precisely explains the lyrics and terms used in rap songs with language that even the most un-hip person can understand. The academic tone here contrasts with hip-hop terminology for a hilarious and read that de-mystifies the double entendres, clever turns of phrase, and general ingenuity that didn’t make sense on the first few listens. Seriously – don’t front like you already know.
